AHB Code of Conduct
Preamble:
The Atlantic Harmony Brigade (AHB) strives to ensure a harmonious and inclusive environment for all members and guests. We do not discriminate based on religion, race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait, gender, affectional or sexual orientation, marital or familial status, income, political affiliation, neurodiversity, or disability. Our code of conduct reflects our commitment to upholding these values and ensuring that every member and attendee feels safe, respected, and valued.
1. Respect for All:
Every AHB attendee must treat others with respect and dignity. Discrimination, harassment, or bullying for any descriptors listed in the preamble will not be tolerated.
2. Effective Communication:
Use positive, encouraging, friendly, and constructive language. Only coach or critique others with their permission. Address disagreements calmly and constructively, focusing on resolving the issue rather than assigning blame. Recognize that AHB attendees come from around the world, so American English will not be the native language of everyone who attends. Therefore, avoid using colloquial phrases or word choices that may need further explanation. Be aware that many AHB attendees may be wearing hearing aids. Hearing clearly in noisy spaces can present a considerable challenge for individuals, leading them to ask fellow attendees to repeat what was said or miss a comment entirely. Practice patience.
3. Inclusivity:
Promote inclusivity at all times. Encourage participation from every member and guest. Avoid forming cliques to ensure that a wide distribution of potential singing opportunities exists among all attendees. Remember you are an ambassador for both barbershop singing and AHB in particular.
4. Professionalism:
Act professionally during rehearsals, performances, and any AHB-related activities. Arrive on time, be prepared, dress appropriately, and maintain a positive demeanor.
5. Alcohol, Drugs, and Smoking:
The consumption of illegal drugs during AHB events or activities is strictly prohibited. Members and Guests are expected to attend AHB events free from the personal influence of drugs or alcohol to the degree it could negatively impact their behavior or judgment. Smoking at an AHB run-through or Rally is only permitted in those areas designated by property management.
6. Safe Environment:
AHB is committed to providing a safe environment for all attendees. Any physical violence, threats, or verbal abuse (such as mocking) will result in immediate action, which may include removal from the event and/or the organization.
Avoid discussing political, religious, or other potentially controversial topics at AHB-related activities, including all run-throughs and the Rally.
7. Respect for Property:
AHB expects all attendees to respect all property, including rehearsal spaces, performance venues, and any equipment or belongings of fellow members.
8. Confidentiality:
AHB expects any personal information shared within AHB to remain confidential. Please respect the privacy of fellow attendees or applicants and refrain from sharing or discussing their personal information without consent.
9. Reporting Mechanism:
Any attendee who believes they have been the victim of bullying, harassment, or other misconduct (whether intentional or not, whether in person or otherwise) should immediately report it to the AHB President, Executive Vice President, or Membership Vice President. A robust investigation will be opened immediately, maintaining confidentiality throughout the process. Findings will only be shared on a need-to-know basis.
10. Accountability:
Members and attendees are expected to uphold this code of conduct within AHB-related activities. Anyone found violating this code may face disciplinary actions, including warning, suspension, or removal from the organization.
Conclusion:
All participants commit to fostering an environment of mutual respect, inclusivity, and professionalism by attending the Atlantic Harmony Brigade. Let's create harmonious music together, both in song and in spirit.
